Chapter Eighteen

Another new lead. Shelby had hoped to find out something useful the night before and the Babes, actually the Plus One, had possibly obliged. Tamara Young. She’d never met the landscaper, but of course, Shelby didn’t garden. Even if she lived in a real house surrounded by greenery, she doubted she’d try her hand at it. It seemed that Edie had gotten the entire allotment of the green thumb gene in the Cox family. Her dad hadn’t been interested either. Which was fine by Shelby. She did find it odd that Matthew hadn’t mentioned Ms. Young, though. The landscaping community in the Bay must be small and known to all involved in the trade. But maybe Matthew dealt with only one company, and not this one. And so, they may not have met. She must stop second-guessing herself. That could lead to embarrassing, or possibly even dangerous, assumptions. What was that old adage about never assuming?

And, what would she do with JT? Could she bring him?

Man, she was really in a state this morning. Time to shake away all of the uneasy thoughts and focus on meeting lots of new people and selling lots of books.

She started the day at the bookstore leaving her sling off, which made it easier to do certain tasks like shelve books. She was able to balance and shove with her bad arm but she then found, after about an hour, that it started to ache. She slipped the sling back on and finished the shelving, in between serving customers.

Just before noon, a group of tourists all wearing identical red baseball caps with the tour company logo on it wandered into the store, practically bursting it at the seams until several decided to leave the space to the book lovers. Shelby breathed a sigh of relief and stopped worrying that some of the stone cats and book-shaped novelties might be shoved off their displays and break on the floor. They’d decided to add the tchotchkes a few weeks earlier, and Shelby was pleased with the sales. In fact, she had been
